Are Breast Implants Right for You?

Breast augmentation surgery, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, is a procedure that enhances and increases the breast size by inserting saline or silicone filled implants under the breast tissue. These implants can be used to increase size slightly, by a large amount, or to completely replace breasts lost to illness. Discuss your options with your surgeon to ensure you have a finished result that you are happy with.

Implant Information

  • Who Is A Suitable Candidate? – Generally, breast augmentation surgery is suggested for individuals who have experienced one or more of the following:
    • Naturally small breasts
    • Normal sized breasts, but the individual wishes to alter their size for aesthetic purposes or to make them more proportional
    • Breasts that have lost volume
    • Asymmetrical breasts
    • Patients who have received a mastectomy or have lost breast tissue

Patients also are evaluated for their overall health, body size for proper proportioning, breast anatomy, and end goals to be sure they will be a suitable candidate. Surgeons like to ensure that their patients can make informed decisions and have a positive outlook and realistic expectations prior to the procedure.

  • What Implant Types Are Available? – The right choice of implant has an effect on the overall outcome of the procedure. Discuss with your surgeon whether they feel that saline or silicone implants would be a better fit for your body type and expectations, as well as the shape. Implants are available in both round and teardrop shapes and can be filled with either silicone or saline.
  • How Is the Surgery Performed? – This surgery is performed under general anesthesia or through intravenous sedation. Incisions are then made in areas to help keep the scarring concealed, such as below the breast curve, around the areola, in the armpit, or through the navel. The implant is placed either under the chest muscle or between the chest muscle and breast tissue based on your agreements when discussing the procedure. Once the implants have been positioned, the incisions will be closed. The implant procedure can also be combined with other breast procedures such as a lift.
  • What Are the Recovery Expectations? – Often, the procedure is performed on an outpatient level. The patient will need to be driven home by someone else, and preferably have someone stay with them for a few nights to care for them. Pain and discomfort are to be expected for the first few days, and a painkiller may be prescribed. On average, within the first two weeks, patients can resume normal activities, but heavy exercise and lifting should be avoided for four to six weeks. The results are long-lasting.
