Common Blepharoplasty Myths

Although there are several non-invasive procedures that address the effects of aging, there are still certain issues that benefit from surgical correction. They include the loose, puffy skin that appears around the eyes as we grow older.

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a popular procedure designed to remove underlying fat and excess skin from the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. If you’re considering blepharoplasty as a way to rejuvenate your eyes, here are some interesting myths and facts that you should be aware of.

Myth No. 1: Eyelid Surgery Leaves Visible Scars

Blepharoplasty rarely leaves visible scarring. Upper eyelid surgery incisions can be made in the natural folds of the lid so that any scarring blends into the folds. With lower eyelid surgery, Incisions are made just below the lower lash line or inside the lower lid, so scarring is not visible. Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss the location and pattern of the surgical incisions, along with the likelihood of visible scarring, during your pre-operative consultation.

Myth No. 2: Eyelid Surgery Prevents The Aging Process

Rather than stopping aging, eyelid surgery turns back the clock. Even after surgery, patients continue to age, but their eyes appear more youthful, giving them a more ‘rested’ appearance than they had before. You’ll look as young as you feel, which can have a huge impact on your self-esteem.

Myth No. 3: Blepharoplasty Completely Removes Dark Circles Under the Eyes

Although eyelid surgery may remove some dark circles under the eyes, it will not remove them all. A lot depends on what is causing the discolouration.

For example, dark circles may be caused by displaced fat pads that create hollows and shadows that resemble dark circles. By repositioning the fat, lower eyelid surgery can reduce their prominence. However, dark circles may also be due to allergies, vascular problems, and similar conditions that will not be impacted significantly by blepharoplasty. Your surgeon will discuss these concerns with you during your consultation.

Myth No. 4: Blepharoplasty Can Eliminate Crow’s Feet

The fine lines that develop at the corners of the eyes, known as crow’s feet, cannot be corrected with eyelid surgery. These wrinkles are caused by squinting and other repeated muscle contractions. Fortunately, if you’re concerned about crow’s feet, UELC can reduce their appearance through a series of Botox treatments.

Myth No. 5: Blepharoplasty Results Look Artificial

When done correctly, eyelid surgery does not create an artificial or surprised expression. The key to achieving attractive, natural-looking results is selecting a cosmetic surgeon who understands how to make subtle but effective modifications. The eyelid surgeons at UELC understand the importance of delivering the best results possible for each patient, based upon his or her unique anatomy and goals.
