Hair Transplant Procedure
As you age, you might notice that your hair loses thickness and fullness. You might have patches of thinning hair or a receding hairline.
Thinning hair can happen at any age and for any gender, though men are more likely to experience it than women. Baldness and thinning hair were once blamed on vitamin deficiencies and regular wearing of hats. However, the reality is that a person can lose hair from family genetics, aging, and hormonal fluctuations.
What Does a Hair Transplant Do?
A hair transplant is a category of processes that move hair from one area to fill a space with thin or minimal hair. These procedures have been around for decades, but the techniques over the past few years have changed significantly.
Who is a Candidate for a Hair Transplant in Toronto?
The ideal candidate for a hair transplant has healthy hair growth at the back and sides of the head. These areas serve as your donor zones. Donor areas allow your surgeon to remove hair grafts and flaps.
In addition to adequate donor hair, you must have realistic expectations. Hair transplant techniques can increase fullness, but modestly. As with any cosmetic procedure, the transplant has limits. Also, if you have very little natural hair throughout the scalp, you may not be the right candidate.
Hair Transplant Techniques and Incisions
Hair transplants involve removing small punch grafts of hair from your scalp and cutting it into smaller grafts for transplantation. You may have multiple incisions throughout the scalp, depending on where the donor hair comes from.
Transplants are not completed in one visit. Instead, you must wait several months for one transplant to heal before another is completed. Overall, it could take up to 2 years to finish. Your surgeon will choose between 3 main types of hair transplant techniques.
- Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT): Your hair is transplanted naturally using groups of 1 to 4 hairs, known as follicular units. Hairs are harvested using a microscope, and the grafting leaves minimal scarring.
- Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): A minimally invasive transplant that uses small grafts of hair follicles transplanted into areas of thinning hair. No stitches are needed, and the results are permanent.
- Combination Method: A smaller strip of grafts is used to replace hair by using a combination of the FUT and FUE methods.
Which Type of Hair Transplant Near Me Do I Need?
Hair transplant procedures are designed around the patient’s needs. Your surgeon meets with you, examines your donor areas, then decides which transplant procedure is best. Sometimes a combination method achieves fuller, natural-looking hair versus using a single graft method.
Your surgeon may also recommend combining the transplant with other procedures, such as a tissue expansion, flap surgery, or scalp reduction procedure.
The Hair Transplant Procedure: Steps Involved
A hair transplant is relatively pain-free, and your surgeon will use medications to minimize discomfort. The treatment is done as an outpatient procedure and takes a few hours. You are awake during the procedure.
Your surgeon uses a tube-like instrument to punch small graft holes from the donor sites and continues the process in areas where the replacement is required. These small incisions stay in line with your natural hair growth pattern so that the hair can continue to grow in a natural formation.
Each graft is placed one-by-one in number of the hairs with follicles, creating areas of density.
Hair Transplant Recovery Time and Details
Your hair transplant involves tiny incisions, but these incisions heal in just a few days. Eventually, the small holes contract, so that they are barely detectable. No stitches are required.
