Hair Transplant Procedures and Recovery

Whether due to aging, genetics, or changing hormones, hair thinning and hair loss can happen to anyone. Although more frequently occurring in men, women may experience it throughout their lives as well. The effects of hair loss can have a tremendous impact on an individual, and they may become quite self-conscious about the area. A hair transplant is a great option to restore the hair and improve self-esteem.

Hair Transplant Procedure Types

Procedures Offered By UELC

At U Eye Laser Cosmetic, our skilled surgeons offer three different types of hair transplantation procedure based on your needs and the results you are hoping to achieve.

  • Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

During a follicular unit extraction, the surgeon shaves the hair at the donor site. The area is then numbed, and individual follicles are extracted. These follicles are then placed in the recipient area through small holes created with a scalpel or needle. This variation of hair transplant requires no stitches and has a faster healing time and often less discomfort following the procedure. Scarring is very minimal as each follicle is removed individually, and these tend to scab over and heal within a few days. A FUE procedure is often best suited for individuals with smaller patches of balding or thinning hair.

  • Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

With a follicular unit transplantation, a strip of tissue containing healthy hair follicles is removed from a donor site at either the back or the side of the scalp. The size of the strip needed depends on the number of follicles to be transplanted. The area where the strip was removed from is sewn shut, and then the strip is placed under a microscope where the surgical team begins to harvest the follicles. The strip often offers groups of one, two, three, and four hairs allowing the surgeon to create a natural look by placing the hairs where they would occur within the regular growth pattern. This method of hair transplant can be slightly more uncomfortable and the area where the strip was removed can potentially swell, but the pain is still within tolerable levels. Stitches are removed within 8-10 days usually, and the remaining scar is very thin and easily hidden with most haircuts except for very short styles. FUT procedures are often the best choice when an individual has large areas that they want to cover.

  • Combination Method

Occasionally, a combination method utilizing both FUE and FUT procedures may be used. This is often the case where patients may have limited donor sites but wish to cover large areas, an individual wishes to undergo a large transplant session all at once where it is unsafe to remove the amount of grafts requested by utilizing one method alone, or where the individuals FUT procedure doesn’t yield the desired amount of grafts. In these instances, combining both procedures allows the surgeon to perform the procedure in a safe manner while still achieving the desired aesthetic outcome.
