How Gynecomastia Affects Men and Boys

What is Gynecomastia?

All men are born with a small amount of breast tissue even though they don’t develop in men the way they do in women. The condition involving enlarged breasts in men is known as gynecomastia. It usually happens as a result of the imbalance between two hormones, estrogen and testosterone, in their body. When the ratio of estrogen increases, it makes their breast tissue swell. This can make playing sports and wearing some types of clothes difficult.

Before we discuss gynecomastia surgery, let us take a look at the reasons, symptoms, and diagnosis for this condition.

How Gynecomastia Affects Men and Boys

Reasons for Swollen Breast Tissue in Men

In addition to puberty, other causes of gynecomastia are as follows:

  • Thyroid problems, affecting the gland that controls growth
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney failure
  • Any disorder or injury that affects the testicles, which produce the testosterone hormone
  • Obesity, causing an increase in the production of estrogen
  • Certain medications
  • Consuming drugs such as heroin, anabolic steroids, and marijuana

Symptoms of Gynecomastia

The first sign of this condition is spotting a lump of tissue on the chest which may or may not be sore and tender. People wrongly assume and associate it with cancer, but your doctor may conduct some tests to rule out the possibility. It can also happen unevenly, with one side’s breast tissue becoming larger than the other.

Diagnosis for Male Breast Enlargement

  • The first step is to examine and ensure that it is not cancer.
  • Then, your doctor may ask questions regarding your medical history.
  • They will conduct a few tests using your blood or urine samples.
  • They may also conduct an X-ray of your chest.
  • After analyzing the results, they will know if you are suffering from gynecomastia.

Treatment for Gynecomastia

Studies suggest that gynecomastia can result in anxiety, reduced self-esteem, and depression particularly in boys going through puberty. It can also cause eating disorders.

You may have to consult a specialist known as an endocrinologist who studies and treats issues regarding hormones and related changes in the body. The treatment usually depends on the following factors:

  • Age
  • Health condition
  • Your response to any medication that the specialist may recommend

If your breast tissues get enlarged during puberty, it usually goes away on its own within six months to three years. Although medication works in most cases, sometimes, you may have to undergo gynecomastia surgery using liposuction to remove extra breast fat. It usually does not leave any scars and involves rapid recovery.
