How Long Will The Results of Laser Eye Surgery Last | UELC

How Long Will the Results of Laser Eye Surgery Last?

When you have issues with your vision, you may feel that your only options are to wear contact lenses or glasses. This isn’t the case, as with the latest advancements in laser vision correction, it is possible to obtain 20/20 vision or better through a quick, safe, and simple procedure that is one of the most commonly performed elective surgeries in the country. The recovery time is relatively short, and you can often be back to your regular activities and work duties within a few days of any of the laser eye surgeries available.

Corrective Eye Surgery

  • Is Laser Vision Correction Permanent?
  • The results of the procedure are permanent and will correct whatever issue that lead you to seek laser eye surgery. This includes nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. The point of laser eye surgery is to change where your eye focuses light by adjusting the shape of your eye. When you have myopia, light focuses in front of your retina, and objects far away tend to be blurry. Hyperopia causes light to focus behind the retina, and objects that are near are blurred in appearance. Astigmatism causes objects to be blurry regardless of distance, as the light doesn’t focus properly on a single point in the eye, instead trying to focus on multiple points.
  • Are There Any Follow-Up Procedures?
  • For the majority of people, the results of laser eye surgery are successful, and no further follow-up procedure is needed. In some cases, however, changes may occur in the eye that can cause some myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism to return and result in some blurring of your vision. In cases like these, it may be required to have a follow-up procedure to correct the changes that have happened.
  • Will the Results Change as I Age?
  • Just like any other part of your body regardless of surgery or not, your eyes will continue to age. Over the years, they will continue to change, and you may develop presbyopia. Most people begin to notice this condition develop around their forties. This isn’t related to the shape of your eye, as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism are, but instead is believed to involve the lens of the eye and the muscles surrounding it becoming thicker and less elastic. This causes more difficulty with focusing on things close to the eye. There are surgical options available to correct presbyopia as well.
